wine friday: hillgate zinfandel.

Is anyone else overjoyed that it’s Friday?

Now that we’ve moved into January the buzz and excitement of the holidays feels…forever ago.

Life returns to normal…

kids back to school…

work goes on…

time to re-organize your house for the umpteenth time to find places for all your new gifts and…

except for occasional pine needle you find hiding in the corner of the living room, Christmas is most definitely a thing of the past.

So Happy First Friday of 2012!

For your consideration:  Hillgate Zinfandel

This Zinfandel has an alcohol content of 14.9%, fairly high for its price point.  It’s smooth, rich and bold…I brought it to a friend’s house for dinner last week and we were all quite impressed.

Zins are often dry, spicy and fruity so they stand up well to spicy foods.  Pair with pizza, lasagna, pasta with red sauce, sausage and peppers and other bold foods including grilled meats and bbq.

$6.99 at Trader Joes.

Happy Friday!

wine friday: [yellow tail] chardonnay.

Looking to save some cashola in the wine department?  Buy imported wine!

This week’s white comes from South Eastern Australia and is quite tasty.  It has hints of tropical fruit but with a creamy finish.  What’s great is you can find this one just about anywhere – Trader Joes, Target, most grocery stores, etc.  So no excuses for drinking overpriced, mediocre wine!

Let’s take a trip down South together, shall we?

I’m talking really South like…Chile. Read more

wine friday: sugar pie red wine.

I have to tell you that this week’s Wine Friday recommendation comes with very few specific details.  And the reason is that, well, we enjoyed the wine so much we finished the bottle and recycled it like the good citizens we are before I could extract all the fine print from it…and I’ve scoured the entire Internet and have come up empty for any more details. wine friday: callaway sauvignon blanc.

I’m finding it a bit hard to buy white wine these days as the thermometer begins to drop, but my fine friends at Trader Joes assured me this was a good bet.  And sure enough I counted 4 other people meandering around the store with the same bottle of wine in their cart.  Maybe the happy employees at Trader Joes were doing some social experiment to see how many lemmings they could get to drive away with this particular wine in the span of 30 minutes… Read more

wine friday: nerelo del bastardo.

This latest red was recommended by my new friend Jeff at our local Trader Joe’s, when I asked him for a good Italian wine.  He passionately explained that Italian wine laws only allow a certain amount of wine to be used after aging in order to have a limited number of government issued neck labels.  When these run out, the excess may only be sold as table wine even though the wine itself is the same. wine friday: charles shaw sauvignon blanc.

Now before you dismiss this wine right off the bat I’ll have you know that I know people who keep both Silver Oak and Charles Shaw in their wine cellars.  That’s right – $75 bottles of wine right next to Two Buck Chuck. Read more

wine friday: rex goliath pinot noir.

Who can resist a wine with a giant rooster on the label?!

Found this one this week at Target…on sale for $4.99 (usually $6-7 at most grocery stores).

wine friday: smoking loon pinot noir.

Normally I wouldn’t be at all interested in buying anything with the word “smoking” in it unless, that is, I’m planning on some really great bbq.  I don’t actually have a great track record with smoking.  One of my first attempts was a total failure, my college roommate and I trying desperately to light a cigar we bought at the local Seven Eleven in honor of my 18th birthday.  Apparantly you have to actually cut off the end in order to successfully light it.

But I digress. Read more
